Sunlight can decrease the risk of vitamin D deficiency & allergic diseases

2016-09 Sunlight

According to the survey from Changchun Hospital in 2007, 1315 children aged 5-8 years were investigated. Half of the students were found to have vitamin D deficiency, which was related to the number of sunshine hours in the Keelung area. The physician Huang Yongxian pointed out that even in sunshine hour’s sufficient area; Taiwan parents generally do not like their infants and young children under the sun. People only bring their infants and young children outside in the morning or afternoon when the sunlight is not strong, with the baby carriage covered, that is why the baby has a potential risk of vitamin D deficiency.

Importance of vitamin D for children

Vitamin D helps the development of bone in children, and also plays an important role in congenital immunity. Children have vitamin D deficiency are more susceptible to viral or tuberculosis infection. After the baby was born, a lot of immune function is gradually matured; vitamin D has become an indispensable element.

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with allergic diseases

In recent years, the study found that vitamin D can reduce allergic reactions. The physician Huang Yongxian shows that people who have vitamin D deficiency are likely to be more susceptible to atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis and asthma and other allergic diseases. Some autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, type 1diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis may have some relationship with vitamin D deficiency.

Does my child have vitamin D deficiency?

No usual exposure under direct sunlight, imbalanced diet may indeed increase the risk of vitamin D deficiency. Parents may ask, is the lack of vitamin D the cause of my child’s allergy? The physician Huang Yongxian pointed out that the formation mechanism of allergic diseases is very complex, allergens in the environment also contribute to the formation of allergy. Vitamin D deficiency is likely to be susceptible to allergic diseases, but it’s not the only cause of allergic diseases. Therefore, allergic children need to receive treatment, and maintain enough amount of vitamin D.

How to make children have enough vitamin D?

Vitamin D is synthesized endogenously via the exposure of skin to sunlight. Physician recommended that people should expose to direct sunlight 10 to 15 minutes in the morning and afternoon to get enough vitamin D. In addition, the sunlight through the glass window is also useless, because the glass will block the light which helps to synthesize vitamin D.  For baby who’s less than 4 months and feed on breast milk, the lactating mother need to accept more sunlight, because vitamin D is not added in breast milk like those formula milk. In addition to sun exposure, older children need to eat deep-sea fish such as salmon and mackerel which are rich in vitamin D.
