NAD Profile

Find out if your body is functioning well

What is NAD ?

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and its metabolites support numerous biological processes in humans, including cellular redox reaction, metabolism, homeostasis, DNA repair, genomic expression and stability. By participating in these biological processes, NAD can modulate our reaction to external stimulation, such as regulating our immunity, inflammation, and response to infection. In our cells, NAD exists in 2 forms, oxidized NAD+ and reduced NADH.

NAD can be synthesized from vitamin B3 and tryptophan found in dietary sources. While it switches in between NAD+ and NADH in cellular redox reaction. On the other hand, NAD is degraded into NAM(Nicotinamide) by NAD+-consuming enzymes in order to facilitate other biological processes. Degraded NAM can be converted back into NAD+ through the NAD-salvage pathway. The stable cycle of NAD production and consumption helps to maintain normal NAD+ levels.

Potential Role NAD+ to Anti-aging

NAD+ and its metabolites may be beneficial in slowing down the aging process. NAD+ can interact with telomeres, which are key to aging. Telomeres play a central role in modulating aging, and their shortening is correlated with aging as well as the possible development of age-related diseases. However, NAD+ has a potential role in preventing this. Different studies have suggested that NAD+ may help prevent age-related functional decline. For example, the longevity enzyme sirtuins relies on NAD+ to carry out its reactions.

Who is at high risk of NAD deficiency?

  • Aged over 40

  • Obese

  • Excessive alcohol intake

  • Sedentary lifestyle

What are the symptoms of NAD deficiency?

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Difficult to concentrate

  • Dull/aging skin

  • Mood change

Why should I take this test?

The level of NAD+ could be a reflective indicator for human health. Many studies have found that NAD+ levels play an important role in anti-aging, metabolic disorders and other aging-related diseases. However, NAD+ levels may deplete by half at middle age. NAD homeostasis becomes imbalanced with aging, resulting in less NAD being synthesized and more being consumed. Therefore, checking the levels of NAD+ and its metabolites allows us to determine whether NAD+ needs to be restored and if our cells are functioning properly in various biological processes.

HK BioTek Technology Competence

•    Sample will be sent to our laboratories in the United States for analysis employing the advanced approach: Liquid Chromatography/ Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry platform (LC-MS MS).
•    This method measures chemical markers even at a low level for optimum test results.
•    One repeated testing will be done for each sample in order to achieve the highest accuracy.

Test Items

We test the amount of 6 NAD metabolites: NAD (NAD+), NADH, NADPH, NADP, Nicotinamide(NAM), Nicotinic Acid (NA);

and NAD/NADH Ratio, NAD/NADPH Ratio, NAD/NADP Index

Besides NAD+ levels, we will also test its precursors and metabolites to help you understand the pathway of NAD in your body.
