1. What is the difference between testing blood, urine, and hair or nail sample for trace elements?
These three ways are to test for your mineral status. Each type reflects a unique aspect of what is going on in your body.
Blood sample: A short and recent exposure to a mineral as it travels throughout the whole body.
Urine sample: Reflects the excreted levels of minerals and toxic metals in a provoked/non-provoked patient.
Hair (or nail) sample: Reflects long-term mineral/heavy metal status as the excess minerals and nmetals in circulation will bond into keratin in hair/nail.
2. What are the sources of toxic metal elements?
The most common heavy metal elements in Hong Kong are arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. Heavy metals from pollution and industrial activities have become a part of our urban life. Toxic metals can be founded in water pipes and cosmetics, plus the recent food safety scandals, like methylmercury in fishes and cadmium in rice products; have raised concerns on heavy metals exposure. Some heavy metals are hard to remove and will accumulate in our body once being absorbed. Chronic exposure to heavy metals can increase our health burden, leading to symptoms like hair loss, hand tremors, short memory, or even affect children’s brain development.
3. How long can the test trace back in your system?
Both blood and urine test can reflect the recent status of the minerals/heavy metals, while an overview of long-term element status requests hair or nail sample for analysis. Since the growth rate of hair/nails vary from person to person, the trace-back period is slightly different for everyone. In most of the cases, an analysis of hair/nail sample can show your metal status in 3 to 9 months.

All sample will be sent to Micro Trace Minerals Laboratory in Germany for analysis. With the ICP-MS technology, the laboratory can determine the level of metal particles from the sample.
